Putting bass on a chopped sample?

Yo!

I use FL Studio's Edison and FL Slicer to cut up my samples.

My problem is this: When I've cut up a sample, and made it sound nice, and put on some kick-ass drums, then I can never figure out how to make a dope bassline on top of it.

It's easy enough to make a bassline if I just loop a given sample, but if I chop it up, I can never find a matching bassline.

What do you do?? Any advice that would make it easier for me?

hear how you want it in your head, then hum it and record it into a microphone so you can't forget it. then keep replaying what you hummed and try to replicate it in the sampler.

also, if you know the notes in the sample you chopped, usually using the same notes in the bass will match as a bass line.

Rob D: thanks for the tip. Didn't think about the microphone-thing. I'll have to try that when I get my mic back.

Another method I've used lately is running a lowpass-filter on my sample, and then inserting the lowpassed version in Fruity, and playing the bass on it till I get it correctly. Actually almost the same thing as the mic-thing.

But most often I don't know the notes for the ssmple. That's the problem. But thx for the advice. It's the best I've gotten for this problem yet.

Yo that is a really good tip Rob D. Seems kind of obvious after u think about it. I usually do the same thing on the keyboard, putting down the notes for a place holder, and switching out the instruments later for something that feels right.

Sometimes its hard to hear which bass notes accompany the sample, so I suggest switching to a different instrument to figure out the key. I like piano, but maybe because I am most familiar with it. Play around with different notes on the piano. Which notes sound fine. Which ones sound awkward? Use the ones that work. Once you know the key, you can switch back to bass.

I like the recording your voice idea as well. This is always a good tip. Try and hum what you want before you play. Your brain is faster at creating the melody than your fingers will be finding it, particularly if you have listened to a lot of music or have a natural ability to hear pitch.
