Real Hip Hop?
What is your enterpretation of hip hop? I personally dont think that most of todays so called hip hop or rap is a good representation of the music at its roots, but neither was Led Zepplin to Chuck Berry with rock & roll. So its not a bad thing but I dont define 50 Cent, or Akon, or even Lil Wayne as hip hop but rather todays heavily enfluenced versions of pop music. Its not that I dont like them or respect their music, but if u respect hip hop, really listen to it and acknowledge artists like Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, and support your local acts (Cuz believe it or not theres cats right on your block with fresh sounds fed by oppression). Im so sick I swear the next person I see call Justin Timberlake or T Pain hip hop again will catch a double painful eye jammie in ODB's name. Go ahead and dance to Ciara. Dont put her on the station Nas should be on is all Im sayin. Shit thats just my oppinion but Id like to know what u think about it. Where can u find the real hip hop these days? _________________ WHISTLER MUSIC.....

I definitely feel you on this topic. I love Immortal Technique. A lot of the real hip hop is rooted back in the day. Check out this Ice T interview.

One of the hard things for upcoming artists is really balancing staying true to your fans and growing out your audience base to make money. Nas was fire when he came out and to be frank the fan base that actually felt his shit was quite limited. In order to appeal to more people and pay the bills, he had to do stuff like that Oochie Wally crap and Nastradamus. The majority of album buyers are suburban white kids, and if you wanna go big, you gotta make stuff they like.
yeah, t-pain is garbage.

Sometimes the lines are blurry... DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli are rappers/producers who have always represented real hip-hop to me. But even they gotta put food on the table, and you'll often see 'em in less "real" projects - which I respect. It's not like when Primo makes music with Christina Aguilera I suddenly don't respect him no more... Money rules the world!
Another thing is: making commercially-orientated music doesn't necessarily mean that it's not real or not dope to me. Jay-Z, for example, is to this day one of my favorite lyricists of the game.
So to answer your question I could say rappers/producers: like Masta Ace, Immortal Technique, El-P, Aesop Rock, Cage, Ghostface Killah, Necro, MF Doom, etc. They are the obvious ones. But the point, just to get some kind of intelligent point out of this post, is that it really doesn't matter. Sometimes the lines are blurry, and that's just the way it is. _________________ Gear: HP Pavilion dv6000, Akai MPC1000, M-Audio Audiophile, M-Audio Trigger Finger, M-Audio KeyRig 49, FL Studio 8.

for me, all music that got a kick, and a snare placed on the two and the four, is hiphop and if it sounds good then it's good and if not it's not

yeah but if you get paid 20.000$ for making a beat to Royce 5'9" and you get paid 200.000$ for making a beat to Christina Aguilera. Those beats take more or less the same time to do, you're gettin 180.000$ more just to make a beat.

a lotta new artists just appealing to the clubs, which isn't new, or the suburban white interpretation of the ghetto. This is keeping mainstream rap from going back to its old school roots but theres lots of underground cats sounding like they still in the heyday, like mr. lif
