Tempo
Hey guys, I'm an aspiring artist and I just wanted to know, typically what BPM you guys run at, and what typical hip hop songs use. Right now I'm running 90 but I'm not sure if it's quite fast enough to match other songs period.

Yeah. More hip hop songs than any other seem to be at 90 BPM. It definitely depnds on what kind of feel you are looking for. Most club Rap hits seem to either be at 80 BPM or like 120. I used to make beats that were way too slow. The melodies were nice, but I have found that faster BPMs make better results.
This might also be my bias from DJing though, as dancier stuff needs to be fast for the most part.

THERE IS NO STATISTIC ON RANGE FOR BPM ..
MOST COMPOSERS DON'T USE A SET BPM AS THE BASE. YOU SHOULD TAP OUT THE MELODY IN YOUR HEAD AND COUNT IT . THERE ARE PROGRAMS LIKE VIRTUAL DJ WHICH HAS A TAP BPM FUNCTION. THIS IS ALSO WHAT DJ'S DO THAT DO NOT USE TURNTABLES , AS YOU GET MORE AND MORE FAMILIAR WITH SOFTWARE YOU'LL FIND THERE ARE GROOVES YOU CAN USE TO COME UP WITH A BPM

BUY A HANDHELD METRONOME! use the tap feature to tap in the natural tempo of the song... works well at finding the tempo of any songs that you listen to. they are really cheap and work great. when i hear a song that i like or beat. i usually tap it out and see what the tempo is.
cheers my first post!

about tempo
I tend to switch it up in terms of the HIP HOP norm and go with the classic 120 bpm, but infuse faster and much slower components of the beat, like a slooooooow bass kick line, with faster accents in the back like the hats and percussion. Just a lil way i try to keep my listener on their toes.

what i do is 140-180 it gives me more room to put in quicker sounds in there i just space out the kicks and snares so it sounds regular speed also gives me a chance to change the melody a bit so it doesnt become super repetitive theres more room for precussions
