Going to college for hip hop production?
nickfro10@sbcglobal.net asked:
I’ve always been REAL interested in making hip hop beats…. i’m a huge fan of hip hop and i think it would be awesome to be a producer. I was wondering if there are colleges (specifically in the Cleveland, Ohio area) that offer courses on music production? What would be my best bet on getting into the hip hop production career? Taking classes or just buying equipment and reading books or what not? Thanks!

download “ableton live” off a torrent.
learn this program it is basically the industry standard for music production.
learn about samplers and synthesizers
learn about “vst”s (these are the instruments that you put into ableton)
you do not need hardware at the beginning. once you have ableton you can install vst instruments and begin. download “sample packs” for beats and vocals.
you also need a program to cut up samples. an easy one (and free) to begin with is Audacity. download jazz and other types of music. cut these up and play with them in ableton
good luck with it. it takes a while to get into but once you have a program down and start to develop a style you can begin to invest in hardware and build up a sample collection.

yo, what the hell are you talking about? ableton is far away from the industry standard.
pro tools and logic pro are the industry standards; pro tools more so than logic. you can definitely start out with ableton and audacity, but at some point, you will want to buy pro tools and an MPC.

Well, I’m broke as fuck, I can’t afford an MPC or protools right now.
I have been using Fruity Loops and Adobe Audition (I don’t need adobe anymore since FL has its own chopping program now)
I just ordered an Axiom 25 cause it was cheap to start out with. I don’t if you have money to buy an MPC go for it but don’t be one of those people that buys an expensive piece of equipment and gives up in a month cause its too hard. I would work you way up, Protools is really the industry standard. I’f you really want tips on VST’s and sample searching then contact me on youtube.

Check the beats. all from FL.

I actually looked this up the other day and found that Berkley has a Online Course, its about $1000, i read the curriculum and its looks really shit. The idea of being taught hip hop production in a school seems really wrong to me and i dont think its worth the money when you could buy a whole set up with $1000.
I agree with Invetrum if you wanna start producing hip hop just download a music production program and get a midi controller.
The cheapest is Audacity which is Free haha, in which you can chop and mix sounds from Mp3s flac aiff and wav file, but you really should be looking at least at Fruity Loops which you can get for free though you are meant to pay for it. if you have the money id recomend Recycle 2 and Reason 5 which is about $500, not too sure if you can download that one for free and get a midi controller cheapest is like under $100 though id recommended something with a keys. which can range from $200 and up new.
Theres millions of Breaks loops etc that you can download online and you can chop that up on your computer with Audacity which is free, but if you have a midi controller youll need something else like Fl or Reason 5 and Recycle 2
In saying that live seen mpc 60II go for less then $300 dollars on ebay and that with a portable turntable would probably total under $500-$600 , though if you really want an mpc or some type of sampling device and sample records id recomend a mpc 2000xl cos of the whole wav and transfering to computer problems youd have with anything older then that. Also Mpc 2000xl usually have a Floppy Disc Drive but you can get a zip drive for it so that would be extra cost and it can be very time consuming with floppies.
I have a Mpc 2000 Numark pt01 Turntable for sampling and A Fantom G8 for melodies and baselines but im planning to get rid of it all for Reason8, Recycle and a Midi controller mainly cos of a lack of space issue. which is another issue if you live in a cramped area.
Really it doesn’t matter what equipment you have its more important how you use.
If you wanna learn about Hip Hop Producing or just Hip Hop history and Culture in general just watch Beat Kings, Beat Diggin’ and Copyright Criminals, Others not related to producing include Scratch, Style Wars, and Bomb It. Another Intersting one is A remixers Manifesto, though not about hip hop it is about sampling which is the backbone of hip hop Music production.
