Firstly for Icedown I know that Hip Hop music comes from people DJing at parties and the MCs screwing around yelling Hip and Hop to get the crowd amped and then it evolved from there, I know it originated from mainly from Dj Kool Herc Djing around the bronx but that was in 1973, but im dont know anything about the dub influence though Kool Herc was a Jamican Immigrant so im sure there was definately some influence there.

Sampling is pretty much the backbone of hip hop production and is definitely relevant , the people back then didn't have money for instruments and shit so they use to loop a drum break or whatever on the turntables and when the technology came out for samplers they used samplers to loop the sound and add on.

I personally think its pretty much the same thing cept with sampling you dont have all the musicians there. People will argue that sampling is just a lazy way of music id like to see them go out diggin' for records and then do what Premo Marley Marl or Pete Rock does.

Ive been playing guitar for 10 years and producing and diggin' for beats on an mpc 2000 for 3, and i definately consider the mpc an instrument.

Though in saying that composition music in hip hop can be fucking amazing eg dead prez's you'll find a way, i think was pretty much all played on a midi keyboard with no samples and is fucking amazing.

I think both are equally important, both you need to put a lot of time into and if you are willing to do that you will get the results.

Well to answer you question from my perspective, as a hip hop producer/Music producer/Engineer/Musician, I would say, if you are a producer it is very important to study and use both. If you are beat maker just starting out who is striving and working on getting to the producer status, when you start out most people are beat makers or programmers in my opinion, and throw in there sometimes a strong musician which is how i started and is very important and very helpful. Being a producer is something that takes some time and a lot of time and a lot of unseen work. Because being a producer is not that you just make hot beats. its knowing all aspects of your music and knowing how to get the sound the artist is visioning in their head with also knowing how to deliver it to the listener. To me being a producer is much like being a Beat maker/composer/musician/engineer/programmer/songwriter/arranger. Now with that said; Sample based hip hop is very important to the producer. For someone starting out and not being that musician that is very good or not one at all, it gives you a lot to work with because you are working with a piece of produced music. Its mixed and mastered, its got natural groove which too me is very important, it has the melodies and the backbone depending on what samples you are working with. Working with samples helps you learn these things and understand them better. Along with the cutting of waveforms, filtering and using the eq, which helps on the engineer side of things. In many cases sample based production helps the producer work on their composition work when they don't even know it and not even working on it.

Till next time, i gotta jet right now but i hope my perspective gave you some insight. J.JetsonProductions
