What is the best laptop for audio and video production on limited budget?

Crazy Carl asked:

I’m prety much looking for the biggest bang for my buck! I would like to buy a used laptop to use for audio production and video production. Audio production is more important to be able to be done completely on (hip hop production as far as running audio program, preferably Cubase, run VSTs and other plugins smoothly for effects and instruments, and record vocals.) I would like to be able to do video production as well but more just loading videos and playback, partial editing but as far as more intensive post production can be done on pc. Platform does not matter (windows or mac). Price is more important and looking around $200 and topping out at $500. Lower the better! Battery power is my second concern and would like at least 2 hours life. Size does not matter, smaller may even be more desirable because of portability and battery life. Any suggestions? Also if possible where to get information to optimize system for audio and/or video production.

I don’t know many of the newer computers out there, but I can tell you my setup that does all that smoothly.

Acer Aspire 3680 with Pentium M Processor, 1024 MB RAM, Windows XP(this is key. It is lite and should work with any laptop that is 2-3 years old, which is what you are shooting for). You don’t need a supercomputer, just the right software.

I also use an Alesis USB mixer and a Line 6 Toneport. I run Mixcraft and Beatcraft. That’s all I need.

Check out TigerDirect.com. I just picked up a Lenovo 3000 G530 with Pentium Dual-Core processor, 3GB of RAM, Windows Vista Premium, 150 GB Hard Drive plus an extra 60 GB, webcam, all the things you need to run recording programs… It was around $500 plus a $100 rebate. Check this link for new laptops under $500: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=17&cm_sp=LN-_-cat_17-_-CV

@Tone any newer laptop will have that. I remember my old Acer Aspire 9300 had one and that was back in 2007 (wow feels so long ago haha). But yeah I just use the macbook pro i picked up its not the high-end one but works great 1099$ is what i picked it up for, but if you’re looking for something cheaper best to go with a desktop

Save your money up and get a mac laptop. IT comes with garageband which you can use to get started making beats with out the need to buy an additional software and you wont end up buying a new pc laptop in 6 months or a year.

If you make the decision to do something do it right. Don’t take short cuts. Start from the beginning and learn as much about production as you can. IT won’t happen over night but it can happen.

    Good luck

Personally i think you should slow down and re-think ur budget… you get what you pay for, and in the computer world this is doubly true… $500 for a laptop wont cut it if you wanna go pro….unless you find a sweet deal on a macbook somewhere on CRAIGSLIST(which you absolutely can!).
To me, the laptop(or desktop lol) is the brain and heart of your setup and should be your most valuable piece of equipment so save alot of future headaches and get ur self a MAC

Whatever you do, dont buy a mac and dont buy a laptop. You should buy a desktop with at least a dual core processor and get a soundcard like the Audiophile 24/96. If you have Fruity loops, Reason or whatever you do not need to be born a producer, that is the biggest line of shite i have ever heard. You need a midi keyboard and the desire to learn and suceed and you can make a name for yourself.

I cant believe how sad the state of music is. whoever you are, and whatever you do – using FruityLoops as a springboard should never be an option. The saddest part is, you actually think you can make it work?!?
you are the reason why the rest of us who can actually play and write music have to try so much harder to be recognized when dipshits like you are clouding the internet with your computer noise and nonsense.

Quite honestly, all of you are sad and pathetic.
Pick up a fuckin instrument or a book instead of a laptop. What you are concentrating on now – no one cares about, except you.

Learn rhythms and keys, then talk to a real musician.

@real music man. how do you think cd’s are produced from your favorite bands? do you think they just record straight to cd, noo! i play drums, guitar, piano and i do it all through a computer. why dont you expand your musical knowledge a little before trying to put someone down. using a computer is alot easier then hauling around a big ol 4×12 cab and all that. Alot more variety of software and effects you can use. i dont like fruity loops, id use ableton or something else. self producing your own music is the best way, you learn more and spend less.
