I’m sorry, I’m dumb when it comes to genres and sub genres. I was just wondering whats the difference between rap and hip hop? I’ve recently been trying to get into rap and hip hop (Eazy-E, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Run-DMC, NWA, ect) and I’m not an expert at categorization and I was wondering what their differences were?

The difference is that Hip-Hop is a culture, and Rap is Hip-Hop’s music.Rap is part of the 4 sub-cultures that make up Hip-hop:

    1.Rap
    2.DJing
    3.Graffitti
    4.Breakdancing

Officer Ross and @ap Musik have it right. Everyone else is wrong. Rap is one of the 4 subparts of the hip-hop genre.

You just wouldn’t know the other 3 because of today’s garbage.

“Rap” is a verb, not a genre.

Hip-hop is really the proper name.

One can rap in any song, but that wouldn’t necessarily make it a hip-hop song.

There are also a lot of other things associated with hip-hop, like clothes, breakdancing, slang, graffiti, DJing, rapping, etc.

Hip Hop is usually reffered to as a culture, whereas rap is a genre of music. As genres, I’ve heard that people classify negative lyrics as rap, and positive lyrics as hip hop. I disagree. I’m a fan of the culture, and to me, its full of ambiguos people. Any form of classification is debatable in this world, and thats one reason why it continues to thrive and expand.

Rap is not what you hear today. Rap is like Run DMC and Eaz E and also Cool G RAP. Hip Hop is what you will ear mostly today such as on the radio. It will consist more of Soulja Boy and Flo Rida.

    Create a video blog…instantly.

Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live.

In my opinion, Hip Hop tends to focus more on the music aspect. In fact, it doesn’t even need to have vocals at all. Rap on the other hand tends to focus on…the rapping.
